Are vacation home rentals and cabin rentals the way to go when you're traveling with a family? They seem to be a very popular alternative to hotels.
How many people have actually rented a cabin or vacation home for their vacation? And did you rent by owner or through a company? Do you recommend it?

Thanks!|||We rented a cabin (vacation home) for the 1st time about 3 years ago. It was alot cheaper than the other response you got (I guess it just depends on where you are going and how much the rentals are there).

We went to Blue Ridge GA and loved it so much, we bought our own cabin and started renting it out as well. To me, it's a great deal because vacation homes offer alot of privacy (a whole house) and space vs a small hotel room. We are a family of 5 (3 kids) so when we go to hotels, we need to get 2 adjoining rooms. We can rent a upscale vacation home or cabin for less than the price of 2 hotel rooms so even for a family, it's well worth it.
Vacation homes today have everything from game rooms to private hot tub and fireplaces on screen porch, multiply bedrooms and bath, fully equipped kitchens, gas grills, swimming pools and more............so it's worth a little extra for the added ammenities and space.

For us, it's definately the way to go!|||well, the only way we can do it is because we are 4 or 5 single people splitting the cost. I think it's pretty expensive to do as a family. We're renting a house on Tybee Island near Savannah GA and it's about $2400 for the week. If ti were just me and a husband with some kids, I could never afford it. But because it is me, my 3 adult daughters and my ex-husband (their dad whom I divorced 15 years ago but am still friends with-only friends!) as well as our 3 grandkids, we split the cost 5 ways and it's less than $500 apiece for each of us for the week- much more manageable! We go through a company, because they guarantee cleanliness and lots of other things. When we go other places, we get hotel rooms- it just depends. Check out all options!
