We stayed in a vacation rental in Tahoe and had an accident due to which panel of the microwave burned. It was the kind that has exhaust fan and light in it. Microwave was relatively old and I think that they should charge only the market value of the old one. They are charging us $697 for microwave, $272 for installation and 12% tax. What should we do? Is there anything we can do to bring down the hit?|||It sounds like you broke their convection oven rather than a microwave, which aren't cheap. Ask for a copy of the receipt, and then pay it unless you can prove it's inflated (get some quotes for the same unit and installation from other places in Tahoe).

In all, it sounds like they're being fair and not charging you a bunch of b.s. fees and penalties -- they just want to recover their expense. If someone came to your house and broke something, you'd want them to pay for its replacement. |||They are entitled to the depreciated value of the microwave, plus installation.
Or the cost to repair the microwave, whichever is more.
In writing notify them that you are disputing the damages and see what happens.|||Just pay it and stop whining.|||Ask that they provide a reciept for said microwave and installation. I would also seek legal advise. Some attorney's will agree too talk to you for free during an initial consultation.|||You have two choices.

Pay them, or tell them that you won't, and try to negotiate a reduction in the bill. If they won't agree, then they can sue you, and you can try to persuade the court that the charge is too high.

In general, what they are entitled to is to be "made whole" - ie returned to the same position they were in before you broke it - so the depreciated value of the microwave, plus installation, or the cost to repair it, whichever is LESS (not more, as the other answerer said)

Of course, if they took your credit card for a deposit they may just go ahead and charge it, and then you'll have to sue them for the overcharge back.

Richard|||Depend on your rental agreement.

You are also liable for the time in which the unit was unusable due to the damage that you caused.

Ask for a receipt but plan on paying it. It is unlikely that you would win a dispute.|||offer to replace it yourself, otherwise you are responsible for any damage you cause.i doubt they will go for you doing it but also ask if you can hire someone to install it if you buy it, it will be the only way you will save any money, good luck
