Me and my family will be travelling to New York City in the spring and are looking into staying in an apartment rental as the cost of staying in a hotel is way too much.
I've done some research on this topic and I understand that under most conditions, it is illegal to rent an apartment short term. However, it looks like it is pretty common for tourists to do this, and that it is the locals that have a problem with it.
My question is, are vacation rentals common in NYC and for the most part is it safe?
And yes, I know to be aware for scams.
Thanks in advance! :)|||Yes, it's no longer legal and yes, it's still common. Any apartment you find for rent that is less than the price of a hotel is most certainly a scam. For example, 99% of the apartments advertised on Craigslist are fake and anyone naive enough to think that they can rent an entire apartment for $60, $80, $100 a night or a 2 bedroom for $100 or $150 deserves to get ripped off.|||Have you considered being part of a home swap program? (www.homeexchance.com)
You can legally exchange your house with someone anywhere in the world and not always simultaneously. After thousands of exchanges, the website never encountered people facing theft, or not getting to their destination house. So it's very safe and reliable.
Check it out :)
