I'm trying to find a town in New England to rent a house on a sandy (not rocky) beach, for a couple weeks this summer for my family. Preferably a town with at least some fine dining or night life, but still have the typical New England feel. I've never been before, so I'm pretty much going by Hollywood's portrayal of New England towns...|||You would want Falmouth, Chatham, Orleans, Sandwich, Yarmouth and Dennis (all on the Cape)
anything on Marhta's Vineyard and Nantucket
Westport MA
Narragansett RI|||Kennebunkport Maine, Ogunquit Maine, York Maine, Plum Island Massachusetts (east of Newburyport, MA), most any coastal community on Cape Cod (such as Chatham, MA), either Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard.
There are other places without the "fine dining" option, such as Old Orchard Beach Maine, Wells Maine, Hampton Beach, NH, Seabrook, NH, Salisbury, MA, Naragansett, RI.
Tips from a local -
Martha's Vineyard is probably the closest to Hollywood's portrayal of New England. The movie Jaws was filmed there.
In Maine the two picturesque beach places are Kennebunkport and Ogunquit.
The coast of Maine becomes primarily rocky once you go "north" (technically east) of Portland, ME.
The ocean water on the south side of Cape Cod is much warmer than the other side. If you go to Maine, wait until August otherwise you won't be in the ocean so much.|||search billow
